Woodstock went down in history as one of the greatest music festivals of all times, with musical guests including Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Crosby Stills Nash and Young, Santana, and Jefferson Airplane. The place to be during the summer of 1969 was upstate New York at Woodstock. Woodstock was a three day music and arts festival held in Bethel, New York on August 15, 16, and 17, 1969. Woodstock received its name because it was originally supposed to be held in Woodstock, New York; instead it was held at a 600 acre dairy farm in nearby Bethel. The festival was planned to have about 50,000 attendees but over 400,000 people actually showed up causing much unexpected chaos. Because such a large amount of people showed up most did not end up paying the admission fee. Major traffic jams were a problem and roads and highways stood still for twenty miles. Even though there were so many unexpected people and the facilities were more than crowded, there was no reported violence; however there were two deaths as well as two births on record. The Woodstock Festival is often most remembered as representing the height of the "Hippie era" and the counterculture of the 60s. Hippies were known at this time for protesting the Vietnam War, supporting Civil Rights, their unconventional dress, experimenting with sex and drugs but most of all their idea of spreading peace and love around the world.
